Putting Your Kids To Participate In The Household Business

If you own your own business, putting your kids to work in the household business makes a lot of sense. Not only are kids not apart of some of the labor and tax laws when working for a family owned endeavor in many areas, but giving the kids a feeling of ownership can take them a long way when the family endeavor goes to their hands some day.

Keep in mind your kid's age as you start to employ them in the household company. Even little children can participate in simple jobs such as copying papers. As they mature, kids can organize papers, file, assist in preparing shipments, keep track of credit, send faxes and more.

Be patient as they learn and explain jobs clearly. You understand your kid better than anyone, so think about whether she or he could follow multiple directions at one time, or if one job assigned at one time is a better fit. If your kid can read well, have that kid handle more complicated jobs and leave the simpler jobs to a younger kid.

While hiring your kids could in the end save you money, make sure you pay them a decent wage for the job they do. Help your kids to keep some of what they make and give some of what they make to a charity. But allow them to have at least some of the cash they've worked for to spend whatever way they choose. This gives kids a stronger want to work and a smaller desire to survive off of credit. Everyone needs rewards, but kids especially have a want for at least some instant gratification.

Be tolerant and realize that children are still children. There might be times when you have a deadline to meet and the child just wants to have fun. Or there may be times when you just can't get your kids to focus. On these days, do your best to make them realize the project at hand and that there is a job to be done first. After the job is done, take time to play, and chill out and enjoy your children. They have to know you're a mom or dad first, and a boss second.

Utilize work time to help your kids learn the joy of making an income, and the requirement and methods of personal finance. Also, assist them in becoming dependable employees, cultivate a strong work ethic, and know the value of a project done right.

Enabling your kids to work in the household business may help you, as a sole proprietor, get help you want to complete important tasks. But, it should also give your kids a taste of the workplace and assist them in understanding the value of personal finance. This way when they mature, they will stay clear from debt and credit problems. That is a much easier thing to ascertain when cash is earned rather than given.
