The people who saved this man's life used the AED to restore a normal heart rhythm. Medical study has proved over and over again that the using these machines will double or treble a victims possibility of living.
In the case of the younger person, there was no AED ready at the hockey ground he was playing at. Despite the valiant efforts of both bystanders and the emergency services, this man tragically expired. Who knows whether he could have been saved had an automated external machine been available and somebody present had attended CPR classes and knew how to use it?
One death is one death so many and this event, as well as several like it, should be sufficient proof that every sports ground should be equipped with an automated external defibrillator. The public should have access to these life saving tools in all public locations where large numbers of people are sometimes present or those susceptible to a cardiac arrest. Some people may think that if you are fit enough to play hockey you are not at serious risk but the statistics prove differently. There are often no symptoms of heart disorder and anyone could be the next sufferer.
